Mount Rigi- one of my favorite day hikes from Zürich
This 3-hour panorama hike (8 km) on mount Rigi is one of the most beautiful day hikes from Zurich. What I love about this day trip is that it is easily reachable from Zurich (30 mins by car) and that the views are absolutely stunning during the entire walk.
Open in both winter and summer, the hiking trail goes up to 1464 meters and leads to the beautiful Swiss Mountain hut and restaurant Alpwirtschaft Räbalp (it is always nice to have a clear destination for any hike especially if you get rewarded with delicious drinks and food). From there you have the most beautiful views over the lake Vierwaldstättersee.
Start your hike at Seebodenalp (1020 m)
If you are hiking with your family or if you are a beginner, I recommend driving with the car up to the Seebodenalp to start your hike. The Seebodenalp is at 1020 meters. Reaching there by public transportation is also no problem. Get the train to Küssnacht from where you can take the gondola up to the Seebodenalp (Even though we have a car, we have done that the first time because the view from the gondola is fantastic).
If you are an advanced hiker, you can start your hike in the town of Küssnacht instead (trail leads through a beautiful forest and passes some farms where you can see happy Swiss cows and other farm animals)
The trail stays relatively flat for the next 2 km. You will pass beautiful lakes, some barbecue places, and can walk on the ridge of the mountain with views of the Vierwaldstättersee. You will pass the Alpwirtschaft Ruodisegg, which is only open during the summer season.
After the first 2 km, the ascend will start from 1020 m to 1464 meters. It is a nice elevation, which isn’t dangerous but will allow you to prove your fitness level. You can easily see your destination on your way up, which is the Alpwirtschaft Räbalp. The restaurant is open both in winter and summer and offers breathtaking views across the whole mountain region. During the winter season, they offer Swiss Fondue, which is delicious. In summer you can sit outside and enjoy the view. Reward yourself as you just finished your one-way hike up on the Rigi!
Follow the same trail back to Seebodenalp – or if you are looking for more adventures walk back down the mountain to Küssnacht from where you will be able to take the car or train back to Zurich.
The overall round trip is 8 km long, takes around 3 hours, and has a slope of 444 meters. It is one of the most beautiful hikes in the region of Zürich and is easily reached by public transportation. You will always remember the breathtaking views from mount Rigi. Hope you enjoy!
